A symbol of luck in Chinese astrology, the Rat is associated with financial prosperity, and this sign works hard to attain it. Looking for a Rat? Find the darkest corner of a home or office, and you’ll find one of these industrious people, toiling away at a project or absorbed in a book. Crafty and clever, Rats are nervous creatures who can’t sit still. They try to act cool and composed, but they can be hopelessly twitchy (except when they’re working), their eyes darting everywhere.

Underneath their composed demeanors, Rats are big-time worriers. Like tiny rodents whose survival is always threatened, Rats are obsessed with security. They never quite feel safe in the world, no matter how much they accumulate Their drive is unparalleled. Like their signature animal, Rats often have sharp features, like pointy noses or narrow eyes.

If you’re the parent of a Rat, you may need to teach this kid how to relax and have more fun. Socially, your little Rat may deal with issues of awkwardness or self-consciousness at moments. Rats might even develop a slick public persona to cover up for their discomfort. Whatever the case, these kids can be rather hard on themselves, competitive or driven to the point of perfectionism.

Baby hoarder alert! Beware a tendency toward materialism and “pack rat” tendencies with this sign, as they kids may surround themselves with stuff to create a sense of security. You may need to allow your little Rat to bring a transitional object, such as a stuffed animal or a favorite blanket, when integrating into a new environment. Try to introduce change and separation to this child, which will build a gradual and lasting sense of security in the world.
